History & Overview

Panna is an absolute wonder, located on the banks of India’s cleanest river : the Carnavati River or the River Ken. Large rocky plateaus with deep ravines characterise this landscape. Post-monsoon Waterfalls gush from the plateau and into the rivulets below. The Teak forests are full of wildlife, providing sights of lesser seen mammals such as the Indian Gazelle, Four Horned Antelope and the Striped Hyena in and around the park.

Panna has seen a tragic recent history, as all the Tigers there were declared extinct in 2008. However, subsequent relocation programmes with the help of Tigers from Pench, Kanha and Bandhavgarh National park – has seen these numbers rise from 0 to 54 in a matter of only a few years. A massive achievement.

This is perhaps why, Panna is only yet a rising star in the Indian Wildlife Tourism Industry, however, today, a Safari excursion to Panna National Park is truly worth a visit. The added incentive of visiting Khajuraho City only an hour’s drive away to see the ancient Kamasutra temples makes for a wholesome tour of India’s Natural as well as Cultural Heritage.
